Narrations of Origin, Performance, Exegesis:
Traces of Oral Practices in Manuscripts

Centre for the Study of Manuscript Cultures, Hamburg
15 - 16 June 2018

As long known and well explored at least in the European context, manuscripts transmit texts not necessarily to be read, but to be used for a variety of purposes, ranging from reading out loud for enjoyment, to oneself or to an audience, teaching, that is, paraphrasing, explaining, elaborating on, or performing, i.e., reciting or even singing. A manuscript may contain a full text or the mere backbone or notes for one, to be used as an aide memoire. It may also contain excerpts of various texts. Most manuscripts, unless they are personal copies made by or for an individual, represent traditions that are shaped by local or regional communities and adapted to their peculiat needs and customs (religious, liturgic, literary, scientific, etc.). For many times and regions, the underlying practices cannot be studied directly. The one source of reconstruction that remains may be the paratextual and para-contentual materials preserved in the surviving manuscripts.

This may take variable forms: special notations, graphic elements, notes, actual instructions, narratives found, for example, in prefaces, but also mere traces of use. The planned workshop aims at making a forray into the jungle of times, materials and cultures and for this reason welcomes diversity of perspective.
