Liturgical Books and Music Manuscripts with Polyphonic Settings of the Mass in Medieval Europe

Centre for the Study of Manuscript Cultures, Hamburg
3 - 4 November 2017

In the Middle Ages, polyphonic settings for the Mass were often included in liturgical manuscripts as additions or in a separate appendix; they were also added to music manuscripts.

The workshop will aim to discuss such different types of transmission from different point of views e.g. by comparing exemplary settings in a broad chronological and geographical range. It will also hope to focus on the relationship between notated music and ritual use.

Topics of interest might include (but are not limited to):

  • The use and function of polyphony in the Mass
  • The use and function of manuscripts with polyphony in the Mass
  • The layout of polyphonic settings
  • The sharing of knowledge between different musical communities
  • Different approaches to singing polyphony (cantare supra librum, cantus fractus, etc.)
