“Non-literary Manuscripts from Qin and Early Han times”
Centre for the Study of Manuscript Cultures, Hamburg
11 - 12 September 2018
During the last five decades our understanding of the Chinese society and culture in Qin and early Han times has been greatly improved by the discovery of manuscripts excavated or looted from tombs and wells. Among the burial objects are calendars documenting major official activities of the owner, inventories of funerary items and legislative texts (statutes, ordinances). Administrative documents found in a well have been discarded from the archives of a prefecture. All these manuscripts provide completely new information on various activities of lower authorities, material culture and the legislation at the beginning of Chinese Empire. The focus of the workshop lies on these non-literary manuscripts. The aim is to examine the respective text genre in terms of specific content aspects, structural and codicological features.
